Topeka cyclist died of injuries

A 19-year-old Topeka man died Friday at Stormont-Vail Hospital from injuries he suffered Tuesday night when he and his motorcycle collided with a two-inch link chain spanning the entrance to a parking lot at 3209 Topeka Ave.
Hospital officials said Mark T. Petro, 2788 Plass, underwent surgery late Tuesday for multiple injuries he received when the chain struck his neck and threw him from his motorcycle.
Topeka police said Petro was alone on the westbound motorcycle and there were apparently no witnesses to the accident.

Mark Petro was born Jan. 11, 1958, in Topeka, where he lived all of his life. He attended Stout Elementary School, Jardine Junior High and Hayden High School, and was graduated from Topeka High School in May 1976. He attended Washburn University.
He was a member of Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church.

Survivors include his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Petro, 2788 Plass; two sisters, Diana Petro and Polly Petro, both at home; and grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Kelsey Petro, 4712 W. 6th.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery.

Mark Petro went to A.J. Stout Elementry School and Jardine Junior High School before attending Topeka High.  Mark was a loyal friend and a good man.  He was only about 20 years old when he passed away after a motorcycle accident.
